A Gardener is someone who works in a garden, growing and taking care of plants, lawn and making it look attractive.

Firm knowledge of large properties that host various garden type is essential ( vegetable garden, herbaceous settings, woodland, formal gardens, themed gardens)

A Gardener Duties:

 

May vary depending on household

 

  • Ability to use a wide range of horticultural machinery and powered hand tools.

  • Able to set out and mark sports facilities.

  • Advising home owners on the costs of plants and any work to be done, giving written quotations.

  • Applying nutrients to plants and maintaining moisture levels

  • Checking the health of plants by identifying any pests or diseases and controlling them

  • Cleaning and maintaining tools and equipment and serviced

  • Clearing rubbish and litter away from the garden and grounds.

  • Constructing fences, walls and ponds.

  • Deciding on which seeds to plant and which locations.

  • Digging, planting and weeding flower beds and borders

  • Driving plant vehicles, small diggers etc.

  • Ensuring a safe working environment for everyone around the garden.

  • Excavating large amounts of earth from a garden and depositing them in skips.

  • First Aid Qualification.

  • Garden lighting

  • Garden ponds

  • Giving advice and guidance to property owners on all matters relating to gardening.

  • Good knowledge of plants and vegetables.

  • Have PA1 and PA6 in pesticide use.

  • Horse or Animal Experience

  • Horticultural experience

  • In charge of grass cutting, emptying bins, weed control and leaf raking.

  • Installing lighting in the garden and also building garden furniture and ornaments.

  • Knowledge of organic gardening methods and techniques.

  • Landscape gardening

  • Laying down paving and concrete slabs to create walk ways.

  • Maintaining and developing the gardens of clients.

  • Maintaining high levels of presentation

  • Maintenance of plant tubs baskets.

  • Organic Topiary

  • Pesticide application

  • Planting a old varieties of fruit trees and rare native trees.

  • Planting new trees, flowers and various plants.

  • Pool Maintenance

  • Producing various designs and layouts of garden landscapes.

  • Pruning shrubs

  • Raising plants from seeds or cuttings

  • Seeding plants and watering them at the correct times.

  • Sourcing the cheapest material, plants, trees and machinery on behalf of clients.

  • Supervising the work of day labourers involved in any projects.

  • Turfing

  • Undertaking the basic servicing and repair of all garden machinery.

  • Using machinery such as lawn mowers, rotovators and hedge trimmers

  • Walled Gardens.

 

Gardeners duties may be in conjunction with other job titles, depending on the household.
